Built about 1,000 years ago during the height of the Khmer Empire, Muang Tan is a Hindu monument to the God Shiva. It was built in the classic Khmer style - very similar in design to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Even today, most of the inhabitants of Cambodia along with parts of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos are Khmer. While they may have begun as Hindu, as this temple attests, they now mostly follow Theravada Buddhism.
