This is the Cheah Kongsi clan house. In the 1800s in George Town, and other parts of Malyasia, immigration from China was at a peak. Families of immigrants who had already set themselves up in town built these clan houses to help and support the newcomers, making it easier for them to find jobs and housing and other necessities.

Today, many still operate as active clan associations - while also taking on the new role of tourist attraction.
