The man pictured on the cover of this book is the reason Aung San Suu Kyi was only harrassed and not killed by the Burmese regime. He is Suu Kyi's father.

Bogyoke Aung San was the army general who spearheaded the Burmese independence movement back in the 40s. He was assassinated in 1947 - a couple of years after his now famous daughter was born and a year before the British left. He's considered a martyr and has remained a national hero. You see his image everywhere - often alongside his daughter's.
