The Mekong begins in the highlands of Tibet and runs through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and finally Vietnam, where it is called Song Cuu Long, or River of the Nine Dragons, because it branches into many smaller rivers.

The delta is vast and its waterways are intricate. Traveling through the area by car or bike means taking ferries or crossing narrow bridges every few kilometers. It's much easier to get around by boat.
