Safranbolu is a quintessential Ottoman town. It may no longer be along the lucrative trade route to the Black Sea, but as a UNESCO World Heritage Site it is along today's tourist trail.

In the 19th century there was a large Ottoman Greek population here, but they all left during the "population exchange" following WWI.
