One day in June of 1926 Antonin Gaudi was crossing a street in Barcelona and got whacked by a tram. Three days later the "mad Cátalan" died leaving behind his great unfinished work - La Sagrada Familia.

The last years of his life were spent trying to raise funds to complete this unique and bizarrely beautiful structure which today is the symbol of Barcelona as the Eiffel Tower is of Paris.

There are efforts afoot to finish it as Gaudi would have wanted. The problem is no one knows what Gaudi would have wanted. There are no extant plans and in any case he changed his mind from day to day.

Not everyone is happy about the way these additions are shaping up and some believe it should just be left alone - the great unfinished masterpiece. But 2026, the centenary of his death, is the scheduled date of completion.
