In the early morning hours of September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo gave his famous Grito, the first "cry" for Mexican Independence. His angry shout went something like this: “Let’s get our lands back from those fucking Spanish who stole it from us 300 years ago!” The expletive is mine. Hidalgo would never have used such language as he was a priest of the Catholic Church, a group not known, neither then nor now, for fomenting insurgencies dedicated to freedom, independence and land reform. He was promptly defrocked and eventually beheaded when caught by Spanish loyalists a year later. But at midnight on the 15th, in every town and village in Mexico, the grito is reenacted. Viva Mexico.
