The Virgen de Guadalupe is Mexico's most popular religious and cultural image and her big day is December 12. On this day in 1531, it is believed she appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on a hill near Mexico City. It was the first Virgin Mary sighting in the New World.

Today the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the second most visited Roman Catholic shrine in the world.
