Every few years it's time for new roofing on the palapa. Our friend Martin's family live in several palapas at their compound in the nearby village of Perez y Jimenez, a few km west of Tlacotalpan.

Palm leaves are cut and dried. Then they are passed up one by one to the roof where they are woven into the existing wooden frame. Even during heavy summer rains and high winter winds it's astonishing how strong and waterproof these roofs are. Click below to see more of the process.
