The Olmec culture is the mother of all Pre-Columbian groups in Meso-America. They inhabited what is now Veracruz and they laid the foundations for all the cultures that followed, including the Maya and Aztec.

The Olmecs were around from about 1500 to 400 BC and they're not only famous for their colossal heads, but they set the stage for art, architecture, language, writing, astronomy, mathematics, sports, mythology, religion, politics, and many more of the things we have come to associate with Meso-American culture. They were to the Americas what Greece was to Western civilization.
