Too Big To Indict

And while we're on the subject of corruption, let's not forget HSBC, the London-based Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. Their main branch here in Campeche is across from the Cathedral.

HSBC was recently accused by the US Justice Dept. of laundering Mexican drug cartel money - but bank officials weren't indicted for fear that it would bring the collapse of the bank and shake the already wobbly foundations of global finance.

Instead they're being fined $2 billion USD while being warned to behave themselves in the future - a trifling slap on the wrist.
