We got together with our friend Glynna who loves adventures and has a car. We headed a few hours east to the town of Hopelchen which is surrounded by ancient Mayan sites.

This is Dzibilnococ as it appeared in the 1840s to author John Stephens and illustrator Frederick Catherwood who traveled together through Campeche for months.

Wherever they went they asked to see Xlapak - the Mayan word for "old walls". The locals would take them to whatever ruins were in the area. They were the first, and believed they would be the last, foreigners to see these sights before utter destruction set in by nature and the hand of man.
