Many Mayan sites in southern Campeche are found deep within the Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul which was created in 1989 and forms a part of the Paseo Pantera (Path of the Panther), a corridor of protected forests stretching through Central America from Mexico to Colombia.

It's home to many species of birds, snakes, monkeys and big cats. Then there are the smaller residents like this guy I spotted on the road. I'm told they make good pets.
