The Irawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) are believed by some to be reincarnated humans. They can be found, in ever dwindling numbers, in the fresh and brackish waters of rivers and deltas from Bangladesh to the Philippines.

Here in Laos they are considered a critically endangered species. There are only a few dozen left in the Mekong.

We chartered a small boat early one morning just south of the falls where they like to hang out. We spent about an hour and spotted 4 of them. They come to the surface every few minutes to breathe.
