In the 9th century, few could read or write. It was true in medieval Europe and it was no different here. Images were used to teach or reinforce important stories. And there are well over a thousand of these relief panels that line the way from the bottom of Borobudur to the top.

And in case you're wondering, I don't really know what this particular relief represents. I'd assume that with a half-naked woman dancing in the central panel it would fall into the earthly delights category.
