This is Camp Leakey, a kind of half-way house for orangutans whose mothers were killed when they were still too young to care for themselves. It was started in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galikas. She, along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, were mentored by Dr. Louis Leakey. Each of them studied different primates.

These orangutans have spent most of their lives around humans and have trouble adjusting to the wilder life of their species, who, as a rule, don't come near humans. These feeding stations, which regularly dish out bananas and milk, are there to compensate for this. It also gives us humans a chance to observe them in situ.
