There is no dearth of newspapers in India, and there is no paucity of tongues either. At last count there were 18 "official" languages - not including English.

Local languages were taken into account when dividing modern India into separate states. Most people in the state of Karnataka, for example, speak Kannada. Whereas in neighboring Kerala, it's Malayalam, and just to the north in Andhra Pradesh it's Teluga.

Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages in the world, is considered official, not because it's a living language but because all the ancient Vedas as well as classic epics like the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are originally in that language.
