Part of the mummification process is to eviscerate the body. But you can't just get rid of the detached organs, they will be needed by the deceased in the afterlife. In the meantime, four Canopic urns, guarded by four animal deities, will watch over them.

From left to right we have:

  • Duamutef, the jackal - he guards the stomach
  • Hapi, the ape - looks after the lungs
  • Insety, the man - secures the liver
  • Qebsennuef, the falcon - tends the intestines

The brain is just scraped out and tossed. Who needs that anyway?
